Choosing Good Over Evil

Life has a way of leading us through valleys—some deep, some barely noticeable—and in each one, I’m faced with a choice: good or evil. Most of the time, it’s not about huge, dramatic moments. It’s in those everyday, quiet decisions that no one else sees but God. Those are the ones that steer my heart, shape my character, and draw me closer to Him. I’ve learned that choosing good over evil isn’t about my own willpower—it’s about leaning completely on God’s wisdom, power, and guidance.

It’s not always easy. It takes discernment when the lines feel blurry, courage when the right choice is unpopular, and a heart that stays in step with God’s Word. But Scripture is clear—this choice is the foundation of a life that honors Him and shows His love to others.

A Clear Call to ChooseRomans 12:21 gives us the bottom line: Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.Paul’s words remind me that evil isn’t something to shrug off—it’s something to face head-on with the goodness of God. Choosing good doesn’t mean fighting wrong with more wrong. It means responding in a way that mirrors God’s heart. When I choose goodness in the middle of hard or hurtful situations, I get to be a light in someone else’s darkness.

The Power of God’s WordMatthew 4:4 shows me the perfect example in Jesus: Jesus answered, “It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”When the enemy tempted Jesus with something immediate and satisfying, He turned to God’s Word instead of giving in. That reminds me that Scripture is my strongest weapon against lies and temptation. If I keep my life grounded in His truth, I can see through what’s false and have the strength to choose good even when evil looks easier—or more appealing.

Choosing Good Requires SacrificeRomans 6:13 calls me higher: Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.Choosing good often means letting go of my own comfort, pride, or plans. It’s me saying, “God, my life is Yours—use me however You want.” It’s not about being perfect—it’s about being intentional. Every day is another chance to align my actions with His will.

Living in God’s GoodnessChoosing good over evil is so much more than a moral decision—it’s an act of worship. Every time I choose good, I’m saying “yes” to God’s will and “no” to the enemy’s schemes. And every “yes” shapes me to look more like Him.

This week, I’m committing to choices that honor God—big or small. I’m leaning into His Word, drawing from His strength, and holding onto His promises. I know that when I do, my relationship with Him grows deeper, and my life becomes a reflection of His goodness to the world.

Whatever I face today, I will remember this: God is with me, and through Him, I can overcome evil with good.
